Best Time to Visit Tanzania

There is no wrong month — only different priorities. Match season to whether you want peak wildlife, migration drama, birds, or quieter camps.

Dry season — June to October

Skies are clear, grass is short, and animals gather at rivers and waterholes. This is peak demand: book lodges early, especially July–September when northern migration crossings are possible.

  • Excellent general game viewing across the north
  • Cooler mornings; warm afternoons
  • Higher prices and fuller vehicles in popular parks

Green season — November to May

Short rains (November–December) and long rains (March–May) green the plains. Photographers love the light; birders arrive for migrants and breeding colour.

  • Calving season in southern Serengeti roughly January–March
  • Fewer crowds and softer rates in shoulder months
  • Some roads muddy in April–May; routes may adjust

Shoulder months — March to May

The long rains deter some travellers, which means more space on the plains for those who do not mind afternoon showers. Many camps offer attractive green-season rates.
