Things to Do in Tanzania

Tanzania rewards travellers who mix wildlife, mountains, coast, and culture. Here is how to build a trip that feels complete — not rushed.

Classic northern safaris

The northern circuit — Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro — remains the backbone of most itineraries. Private game drives put you among elephants, cats, and vast plains without sacrificing comfort at camp.

Beyond Bush Safari shapes routes around season, migration, and your pace. Five to ten days on the ground is the sweet spot for a first visit.

Mountains: Kilimanjaro, Meru, and Lengai

Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest free-standing peak and the most popular trek. Mount Meru, often climbed as acclimatisation before Kili, offers steep forest trails and crater views above Arusha. Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano on the Rift, suits adventurous hikers seeking something rare.

  • Kilimanjaro: 5–9 days depending on route and acclimatisation
  • Meru: 3–4 days, excellent pre-trek conditioning
  • Lengai: strenuous overnight ascent, best for fit, experienced hikers

Zanzibar and the coast

After dust and early starts, Stone Town and the spice islands offer coral beaches, dhow sails, and Swahili architecture. Many guests finish a safari with two to five nights on Zanzibar — a gentle counterpoint to the bush.

Culture, balloon flights, and day trips

Maasai boma visits, coffee tours on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, and Hadzabe experiences near Lake Eyasi add human depth to wildlife days. Hot-air balloon flights over the Serengeti at dawn are unforgettable extras.

Short day trips from Arusha — Materuni waterfalls, Chemka hot springs, or Cultural Heritage Centre — work well on arrival or departure days.
