Safari Packing List

Layers beat a heavy suitcase. This list covers clothing, gear, and documents for comfortable game drives in variable bush weather.

Clothing

Mornings are cool; middays warm. Neutral tones (khaki, olive, stone) blend with the landscape and attract fewer insects than dark blue or black.

  • Light long-sleeve shirts and trousers — sun and insect protection
  • Fleece or warm layer for dawn drives
  • Light rain jacket or packable shell (Nov–May showers)
  • Closed walking shoes or light hiking boots
  • Wide-brim hat, sunglasses, buff or scarf

Gear and toiletries

Binoculars transform game drives — 8x42 is a versatile choice. A headlamp helps in camp; power banks are useful when solar charging is slow.

  • Sunscreen SPF 30+, lip balm, insect repellent
  • Personal first-aid: plasters, antihistamine, rehydration salts
  • Camera with spare batteries or charging plan
  • Day pack for drives and domestic flights

Documents and money

Keep originals and copies separate. Lodge Wi-Fi exists but is not guaranteed in every camp — download maps and confirmations offline.

  • Passport valid 6+ months beyond return
  • Printed e-visa approval and travel insurance certificate
  • USD cash in good condition (series year checks apply at some banks)
  • Credit card for lodges; backup card stored separately
