Standard holiday insurance rarely suffices for a 5,895 m trek. Confirm altitude, evacuation, and cancellation before you pay deposits.

What your policy must include

Insurers ask specific questions about maximum altitude and activity type. Kilimanjaro exceeds the ceiling of many basic policies.

  • Emergency medical treatment in Tanzania
  • Helicopter or ground evacuation from the mountain
  • Cover for trekking/hiking to at least 6,000 m
  • Trip cancellation and curtailment if you must abort

Read the exclusions

Pre-existing conditions, undeclared altitude activities, and reckless behaviour clauses can void claims. Declare the trek explicitly when purchasing.

  • Confirm cover for porter and guide evacuation if you are liable
  • Check gear loss limits for delayed baggage
  • Save emergency contact numbers offline on your phone

Before you travel
