Kilimanjaro Packing List

Temperatures swing from tropical forest to sub-zero wind chill at Uhuru Peak. Layering, dry feet, and a disciplined bag weight keep you moving.

Clothing layers

You will dress and undress multiple times daily. Avoid cotton next to skin — synthetic or merino wicks sweat and dries faster.

  • Base layers top and bottom (2 sets)
  • Fleece or soft-shell mid-layer
  • Insulated summit jacket (down or synthetic)
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Warm hat, balaclava, and sun hat
  • Liner gloves plus insulated summit gloves

Footwear and accessories

Break in boots before flying. Gaiters keep scree out; trekking poles reduce knee strain on descent.

  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support
  • Gaiters for rain and dust
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended)
  • Sleeping bag rated −10 °C to −15 °C (rental available)
  • Headlamp with spare batteries

Bags and hydration

Porters carry a duffel — typically 15 kg maximum — leaving you a day pack for layers, water, snacks, and camera. Tanzania restricts single-use plastic on the mountain; use refillable bottles.

  • 3-litre hydration capacity (bladder plus bottle backup)
  • Dry bags for electronics and sleep clothes
  • Snacks you trust at altitude — bars, ginger, sweets
