Kilimanjaro Success Rates

Summit statistics climb sharply with extra days on the mountain. Rush the route and altitude wins; give your body time and odds improve dramatically.

Duration vs summit odds

Approximate industry averages vary by operator and client fitness, but longer itineraries consistently outperform short ones:

  • 5-day routes: roughly 60–70%
  • 6-day routes: roughly 65–70%
  • 7-day routes: roughly 75–80%
  • 8-day routes: roughly 80–85%
  • 9–10-day routes: roughly 85–97%

Route character

Machame and Lemosho offer strong acclimatisation profiles and scenic camp moves. Marangu hut route is shorter with a lower summit rate but appeals to those preferring dormitory beds. Rongai approaches from the north — quieter, drier in the short rains, slightly gentler gradient.

Behaviours that help

Climb high, sleep low. Hydrate steadily — often three litres or more above 3,000 m. Eat even when appetite fades. Walk pole pole on summit night; your guide sets a sustainable pace.
