Training for Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is a trekking peak, not a technical climb — but altitude and long days demand a base of cardio, strength, and hiking habit.

Timeline

Start structured training four to eight weeks before departure if you are moderately active; longer if sedentary. Consistency beats heroic weekend hikes.

Cardio and hills

Build aerobic capacity with brisk walking, jogging, cycling, or swimming three to four times weekly. Add stair sessions or incline treadmill with a loaded day pack to simulate summit night.

  • Aim for 45–60 minute sessions at conversational pace
  • Once weekly: longer hike 3–5 hours with pack weight
  • Practice the boots you will fly with

Strength and mindset

Legs, core, and ankles stabilise you on uneven volcanic scree. Squats, lunges, and step-ups need no gym membership.

Mental pacing matters: summit night is slow, dark, and long. Train patience — pole pole is strategy, not weakness.
